1st week

Our first week of internship at WESVIARC was fine. It was a busy week but still we have learned a lot. The employees there were friendly and approachable.

April 16
On our first day, we were introduced to our agency supervisor Ma’am Flerida who will be supervising us for the whole internship period. She gave us an orientation about WESVIARC. After which, she told us to write a one hundred words essay on what we expect to happen for the following days. We had an election of officers and then Ma’am Flerida toured us to the different stations of WESVIARC. We were dismissed early because there was no activity planned for the day.

We’ve learned how to make fruit bags that were used to wrap mangoes. Afterwards, we had a lecture about tissue culture. We were taught on how banana tissue culture is done. Ms. Flerida also told us the importance of tissue culture for plants: 1) rapid propagation of plants 2) convenience in transporting plants 3) disease-free planting materials. We’ve observed how a chemist made a medium that acts like a soil for banana tissues.

April 18
We were told to collect different kind of weeds which will be later used in our activity. We instructed to sort the weeds we have collected into three kinds: 1. grasses 2. sedges 3. broadleaves. During our afternoon session, we continued the lecture about banana tissue culture. This time we performed the steps on how to sterilize the sucker of the banana.
