the first week of internship

The first week was very tiresome yet exciting for me. I am going to experience the first ever internship program.

April 16

We all gathered at the waiting shed in front of WESVIARC so that we cen proceed to our destination, Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center. As we approach the gates of WESVIARC, we were all excited at the same time very nervous. We went to the guard house to inquire where are we going to proceed and start our internship. The guard told us to just sign-up our names and he accompanied us to the Agency supervisor's office. There, the supervisor instructed us to attend first the Flag Ceremony.

After the flag ceremony, a male faculty member lead us to the conference room and told us to introduce ourselves to the college OJTs. Right after that, Ma'am Flerida brought us to an air-conditioned room. She explained to us all the details about WESVIARC. Then, she told us to make a short essay about our expectations in WESVIARC.

She also took us on a tour around the compound and to the rice fields where different varieties of rice, corn and grasses are planted.

Finally, Ma'am Flerida declared that we can now go home. We just reported half-day.

Edward Fortuna was absent on our first day of internship because he extended his vacation.

April 17

We learned how to make fruit bags for the mangoes. It serves as a protection for the mangoes because insects tend to 'attack' mangoes especially during dry season. the whole morning we were busy tearing, folding and stapling. We were enjoying too much that we haven't noticed that we already finished almost five directories (old directories are use in making fruit bags).

In the afternoon, the first few minutes were spent for a short introduction about tissue culture and how it is made. Then we observed how the medium in culturing bananas are made (the medium is where the banana tissues are planted). We tried pouring the mixture of the medium into the smalls jars, which later on will be sterilized inside the pressure cooker.

After listening and doing some experiement, we were dismissed and went straight to Ma'am Flerida if have some tasks to be done to consume our 8-hour period. She gave us an option if wanted to wrap the mangoes with the fruit bags we made or we will be dismissed early again.

April 18

The persons in-charge in the tissue culture are in Passi City to collect the shoots to culture Cardava variety of Banana.

The whole morning we were again busy making fruit bags. Later that morning, Ma'am Flerida taught us how to wrap the mangoes using the fruit bags. at first only a few were willing to help.

In the afternoon, the persons from the tissue culture department arrived from Passi City. We observed how the actual procedure in culturing banana. first, we should clean it. Then, we shouldremove the outermost layer of the shoot. After that, we will again wash it. After washing, we should again peel the layer again and wash it again. This process continues until the innermost layer is left. We should divide it into four so that it will fit into the small jars where the medium is. After the demonstration, the agriculturist told us if we wanted to try planting the stalks into the jars. We were all willing to try but the stalks were just limited so 'first come, first served.'

After that, were dismissed and went straight to Ma'am Flerida. she told us that we must have wrapped at least one mango. So all us rushed to the ladders and started wrapping the mangoes. after all of us had wrapped a fruit or two, she dismissed us.

April 19

We spent the whole day in the tissue culture department. We performed the actual procedure in culturing the Cardava variety.

But even though the whole day was very exhausting, we still continued enjoying our tasks.

Upon finishing our long day's tasks, we all proceeded to the volleyball court and relieved ourselves from 'stress' by plaing volleyball.

April 20

I was absent...

They told me that had a discussion about vegetables.
