Our First Two Days of Internship

April 16

Our first day in WESVIARC proved us that it is not really something to be nervous of. We were warmly welcomed by the staffs and employees.

We attended the flag ceremony. After that, an employee of Wesviarc gave a brief but very informative speech about Global Warming and Greenhouse effect. We were then brought to the conference room and were introduced to our supervisor, Ma'am Flerida. We had our orientation and she announced to us the house rules. We were made to write a 100-word essay on what we expect in our internship in wesviarc. We also elected our officers- Gelli as the president, Gregory as the vice pres., Aisha as the secretary, and Chari as the treasurer.

Ma'am Flerida toured us around the wesviarc campus and showed us some of the research works of agriculturists on the different variety of rice.

We learned how to make paper fruit bags. The bags were used to cover and protect the fruits of the indian mango trees in the campus. The base of the bag was intended to be folded slantingly so that when it rains, the moisture trapped in the bag would just flow down. Ma'am Flerida explained that the fruit will rot if the moisture stays inside.

Then, we attended a lecture about tissue culturing. The resident chemist showed us how to do the process of making a medium for banana tissue culture. The medium is composed of water, sugar, agar and definite amounts of certain substances and vitamins needed for the growth of the banana. The finished mixture was then boiled.
After that, the medium is ready to be distributed in glass bottles. Eager to do some hands-on work, we did the pouring of the mixture into the bottles.

So far, we enjoyed our internship in WESVIARC.
