At last... our last week...

The last week was the best week ever during our SSIP in WESVIARC...

But unfortunately, we have to go back to WESVIARC once in a while... sop that we could comply our requirements...

After all it was all worth it... We had gained enough knowledge and things regarding our stay in WESVIARC...

Last Week

We can now breathe deeply for it was the last week of our internship ,but we are not still finished with the requirements for our clearance. It was still an achievement to know that we stayed there for almost a month. With all the things we learned, I say it was worthwhile.

Our Last Week

May 7

WESVIARC's 48th anniversary celebration started with a mass and parade of employees. There were also peoplefrom other agricultural agencies from different provinces in Region 6.
The program was mainly composed of awarding ceremonies, sportsfest, and intermission numbers.
At lunch, we had a little food fest in the mini "forest" where each of us has a contribution.
We performed our line dance in the afternoon. We were glad we did well.

May 8

I really thought we'll have our tractor driving lessons this day! Instead, we went to the National Seed Quality Control Services building. NSQCS is a sole agency of Department of Agriculture under the Bureau of Plant Industry which certifies seeds.
In the afternoon, we proceeded to the seed health laboratory. This is where seed pathogens are being studied and observed. We made our own samples which contains 25 palay seeds in an evaporating dish with a moistened tissue on its base. After few days, we expect to see pathogens particularly fungi.

May 9

At last! We were able to have driving lessons! Despite the disturbing noise of the tractor's engine, I enjoyed maneuvering the steering wheel and stepping on the pedal.
This has been one of the best activities in WESVIARC.

May 11

This is the last day of our internship. Our group went to the nursery, this time, to learn asexual reproduction of plants. We did a hands-on on grafting mangoes. I only hope my grafted mango will live long.
After that, we went to the seed health laboratory to see our palay seeds. There we saw and viewed the fungi on the electromicroscope.

Last week

May 7

We celebrated the 48th anniversary of WESVIARC. The day started with a mass followed by a parade. After which, a contest was held for the employees of WESVIARC. During the program, we stayed in the conference hall to practice our intermission number for the afternoon. We had our shared lunch in a mini forest. It was not really a good place to eat but it is the only spot left. After which, there was a dance sports participated in by contestants from Iloilo and Antique. They danced samba, rumba and many more and the winner was the pair from Iloilo.

May 8

Our assignment was at the seed laboratory. Ma’am Flerida accompanied us to the seed lab. The assigned lecturer gave us a quiz. We were all shocked because we have no idea about the questions given. After that, we discussed the answers to the quiz. However, Sir noticed that we were quite inactive so he dismissed us to have lunch.

In the afternoon, we returned to the seed lab. The lecturer during our morning session was not around so Sir Vemesio replaced him. We went to the seed health where it is air-conditioned and learned the materials they use in studying seed borne fungi and pathogens. We went back to the conference hall to do something. We placed 25 rice seeds on a three layer of wet filter paper and placed it inside the incubation room.

May 9

It was our group’s turn to drive the tractor. At first sight, it looks complicated but when it was my turn to drive, it was just like driving a bump car. Ma’am Flerida then told us to stay at the nursery. After some time, she dismissed us early.

The last week

Monday

Ok, today is the day where we are going to present our line dance in the national farmers day or something called like that. I came early to practice because chari said we should be there 7:30 but was surprised when there were only a few of us already there. We practiced a little then people started to argue about our formation. So we waited until they had decided the formation and practiced a little again. We then had our lunch at the mini-forest near the entrance which was kinda fun. So we just presented our line dance then we went home hurriedly after the grand applause. Thank you, Thank you..

Wednesday

Oh, its already Wednesday. The yesterday was kind of fun due to the very difficult test which was supposed to be for the college which was given to us at the seed laboratory. Well, at least I got some of the answers right! after the test we learned a thing or two about the questions due to a lecture. In the afternoon we then had a quick laboratory work about fungi. On Wednesday we were finally made to ride the tractor which is very much like a car. Then we were one again dismissed early to rest for the day.

Friday

Finally its the last day! let us jump up and down like monkeys to celebrate! well, im not going to do that but it will be fun watching greg. haha. In friday morning we were thought grafting, budding, marcotting, and something I dont know how to spell. We then went to the seed lab to view our lab work that tuesday under a high-powered microscope. Then we planted medicinal plants to complete the 50 medicinal plant requirement and that was it. GO greggy dance!!!

FRIDAY

we didn't do a lot. we observed the seeds we planted last tuesday, then we went to the nursery to plant our medicinal plants. then, we waited until ma'am flerida dismissed us. it was half-day for that day.

May 11-Friday

Today is the last day of our expected to be last week here in the agency. Our group was assigned to the nursery(not to "HIDE" anymore). We were taught how to perform assexual reproduction on plants. We learned how to perform grafting, marcotting, budding and another way that "the term can't stick to my head". After that, we also had time to start planting our medicinal plants(requirements for our clearances). When noon time came, we were again dismissed early. Another "HALF DAY"... Wuhooo... :)

May 10-Thursday

Today was a very sad day for me. I was absent for a whole day because I had a fever. But, I also learned something from my co-interns today. That they did nothing in the agency but play, sit and play. And that they were dismissed early...(How I wish I just went to work...) Awww...;(

May 9-Wednesday

Today is one of my most awaited days during my stay here in WESVIARC. Today is the day we get to drive the tractor(for us group2 people). We were very excited. I was the first to volunteer to drive the tractor. I was very very nervous that I might direct the tractor to hit the tree in the middle of the ground or the cars nearby but, at the same time very very excited. After all of us finished driving the tractor, we were asked to proceed to the nursery to "HIDE". When we arrived there, Sir Ike offered us santol, which we gladly accepted. After our trip to the nusery, Ma'am Flerida told us that we were free to go... YIPEE!!!! :)

May 8-Tuesday

Today is another shocking day for us interns, just imagine starting the day with a very mind boggling test about seeds. None of us has an idea what the answers to the questions were. And after that very very challenging test, we had a lecture about the answers to the questions in the given tests. After about half of the lecture, we were asked to have our lunch break and to return in te afternoon for the continuation of the lesson. But in the afternoon, instead of continuing the lecture, Sir Nemesio asked us to proceed to the seed health lab to perform an experiment to help us determine and identify common pathogens found in rice.

Last Week

May 8
I arrived a bit late. We get to get to go the seed lab. The person who was in charge their gave a quiz. The quiz was hard and we don't have a clue but the instructor told us to just answer them.
I have no idea how to answer those questions.

May 10
I came almost late. In This day we didn't get assigned to any facility. We just sit around and play. The day was boring. We got dismisse early.

May 11
I came almost late .I thought it was just another boring day.We get to see the seeds in the microscope. It was not that much fun but at least there's an aircon. We got dsimissed early.

3rd week

April 30
I came late. We get to survey residents who stay in WESVIARC.It was kinda hectic because me and my partner got delayed. We get to have a boring lecture in the afternoon.
We get to have a meeting about some anniversary.

May 2
Since their was that labor day in May 1 there's now work. I came early. We got transferred to livestock and we get to take fecal samples from the chicken. First we get to catch the chicken and we get to take the turd out of its butt using a long cotton buds. It was disgusting but interesting.

May 4
I was about to be late.We get to segregate seeds again. After that we get to have a meeting about the incoming anniversary next week. After the meeting we get to have a early dismissal. We stayed a bit longer for practice.

2nd week

april 23
We get divided into two groups. One in the nursery and the other in the livestock. We learned about grafting, marcotting, budding and etc.We get to experience how to those things,The fun part it was not boring..

april 24-25
I arrived early and we get to stock up soils. It was fun and messy. We got transferred also to engineering. We get to segregate seeds. We got early dismissal.

april 26
We get to have tractor driving in this day. It was fun. We get to have the instructor standing beside us. We get to have this speed limit.I It was slow but least we get to try..

Friday May 11,

In this day ,we had nothing to do but sit around. We had nothing to do so we decided to go to the seed lab and see the pathogen that were present after four days, while the other group were in the nursery grafting plants. There, we went in the laboratory by threes. The result was we saw three dots and we believe that they were fungi. After seeing the pathogens, we went to the nursery to plant the herbs. After that, we were dismissed.

So calm and dull, it makes you care less..

We're doing nothing at all..
Wednesday (May 9)

Our group did nothing for this day well except for watching the other group get their shot at driving the tractor. After they’ve finished, we were then assigned to the nursery. There, we sat till we got sore from sitting.. Then someone had the right sense to approach ma’am Flerida and ask where or what or why.. After that horrific ordeal of dullness, we were dismissed early (maybe because ma’am couldn’t answer those questions?)..

Another line without a hook..
Thursday (May 10)

It’s another day of doing nothing.. We burned time till it was maybe about 12 and we were dismissed. And so the nothing streak continues..

Pour the champagne, it’s the last day (supposedly)..
Friday (May 11)

At the beginning of the day, we had nothing to do (the record kept playing the same old song).. Ambiguously, the streak ends. We went back to the seed lab to view our rice seeds because the streak might continue. We waited at the conference hall till they’ve set up the stuff needed. We were told to go in threes because there wasn’t enough equipment. We viewed the fungi in our rice seeds under a microscope. My group had trouble spotting the fungi for it was premature. It was only the fourth day and it needed nine days.
After that fungi “frenzy”, we went to the nursery to help plant medicinal plants for our requirement. Then after that, it was all over in just half a day.. For the last time, take a good hard look..

It came down this way..

Tuesday (May 8)
That day, we were taken to the seed lab. In their conference hall, we waited for someone to give us some kind of introduction, but when that someone came, what we got instead was some crummy test. Maybe it was their way of finding out how much we know about the topic of seeds, but we never wanted it to be that way. After the ghastly test, we had a lecture. The guy in charge was really reluctant and apathetic in giving the lecture. That’s why he dismissed us early that morning, but “his reason (that he told us)” was that we all looked hungry..? He's got something else in mind.
Later that afternoon, we went back to the seed lab where a new guy took charge of us. He took us to a laboratory and taught us about seed health. Then we performed some sort of lab work. It involved putting rice seeds in a damp tissue to let fungi grow. Our work has to be observed in nine days thus prolonging our stay in WESVIARC. We then went home..

Thursday and Friday

Thursday. In the morning, many of us played _______. I don’t know how to spell it so let’s just leave it blank. We didn’t do anything that day! We were then sent home. (Half-day # 3)

Friday. In the morning, we were assigned in the nursery. There, we were taught about the grafting, budding, marcotting, and something called “in earth” (that’s what I heard). After that, we started planting 27 of the 50 medicinal plants that we needed to pass to Ma’am Flerida. (Half-day # 4)

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday. We all went to the seed laboratory. We had a test before the lecture. The test had nine questions. Out of nineteen students in the room, a total of 0 knew the answer even to one question. So we sat there looking at our papers and making wild guesses. Believe me, they were really WILD guesses. For example:
Question: What is seed certification?
Answer: It is the cerification of seeds.
After the mind boggling test, we were lectured on about the NSQCS or the National Seed Quality Control Services does. After about thirty minutes of lecture, Sir dismissed us because he felt that we were hungry. Yes. He was right.
In the afternoon, we were brought to the seed lab and placed the rice grains in a sort of like an evaporating disk with a damp tissue. It is to make a home for different fungi. We would then study them when the time comes.

Wednesday. In the morning, it was time for the group two, us, to ride the tractor! Yahoo! I really had a great time driving it. It was very fun. Then we were made to hide again in the nursery. There, we ate “santol” that was generously given to us. After, that we were dismissed for the day. (Half-day #2)

Monday

Monday. Some of us arrived at WESVIARC early to practice for our number and most didn’t (well that’s a surprise). As said, we practiced until some of us got bored and complained. So we sat there doing nothing while the other group was finishing their poster. When the clock struck nine, we remembered that we were supposed to attend mass that morning. So we (five of us actually) tried to attend the mass (or what was left of it) in the chapel. We stayed there for about three minutes and then the mass ended (surprise!). It was as if we didn’t come at all.
At about eleven in the morning, we had our lunch in the most unlikely place to eat. Yes. We ate lunch in the mini forest. But, actually, it went well. After lunch, we practiced again and played. When it was time for us to perform, we were a bit scared. But our audience clapped at the end. Wait, does that mean we did well? We still don’t know the answer. After doing the line dance under the hot sun, we went home.

Monday-May 7

Another week has gone by and we are at our final week(hopefully). Today is such a special day for the institution, today is its birthday. The Monday morning didn't start with the usual flag ceremony. But instead, a mass started the day. After the mass, there was a program held to honor some of the best farmers here in Panay. During the program, there was an intermission number from the college OJTs. And there was also a dance sports competition, participated by a pair from Iloilo and another pair of dancers from Antique. But, for us highschool, we spent the morning practicing for our intermission number in the afternoon. When lunchtime came, we all gathered in the mini forest for the sharing of the foods we brought. After lunch, there was a continuation of the program. And at about 2:30, it was our time to shine. We were called upfront for the rendition of our intermission number. And, we danced YMCA. After the program, we were already allowed to go home, many of us went home immediately to rest after a long day.

Last Day High

20 days of SSIP is finally over..(sigh..)

MAY 11 == FRIDAY

last day at WESVIARC(well, not exactly..). For the first time since our first day, we didn't have to wait for Ma'am Flerida to tell us where we were assigned. She was already there, waiting for US. Well, we just had to finish hte activities they have planned for us, the other group, that is, Char's group. Well, since we had nothing to do, Ma'am Flerida sent us to the seed lab to check out the rice seeds we planted last Tuesday. Ma'am Cora and Sir Nemesio Were shocked to see us there since the rice seeds needed 9 days of waiting for it to be fully prepared. Nevertheless, for us to do something, they made us wait in the Conference Room, so they can prepare whatever is needed.
There, we played Truth or Dare..hehe..=) Then, Ma'am Cora came back, and told us to go to the Seed Health room. However, we did so in groups of threes. I went with Kate and Tricia. There, we were able to do real lab work since April 16(so sad..). We used the microscopes available to view the rice seeds we planted(we used Audie's) to find out whether there were fungi growing on it. However, there wasn't any, since it was to early to find out(again, it needs 9 days for fungi to grow), and we ended there. We then went to the Nursery to plant the herbal plants for our clearance.. And then....................... Ma'am Flerida dismissed us early for the third time this week because, we have finished all activities planned for us to do..=)

Friday

May 11 - Monday

Our group have nothing to do in the morning, but after a while, together with the other group, we planted our medicinal plants in the seed bags and we were dismissed early(again).

4th week monday

It was the foundation day of WESVIARC. We practiced our dance the YMCA in the morning. The we eat our lunch there togrther. We performed our intermision number in the afternoon.

3rd week wednesday

Our first day in livestock department. We were assigned to make a poster about quails. The we observed how to get fecal samples frome some chickens. Then we went to the incubator to observe some hatching chickens.

4th week friday

May 4

We went to the conference hall, and then we separated some seeds it was very hard to separate because there are so many seeds, about 3 sacks!!! Then we practiced for our intermission number for Monday. Then we went home.

friday 05-11-07

This morning we were sent to the nursery for to have a lecture on grafting, budding, marcotting and ?????(I forgot the last one). Then, we were told to plant our medicinal plants in a seed bag and we were dismissed.

Thursday, May 10, 2007

May 11

They planted medicinal plants.(I came late and even if I arrived early I couldn't help because my arm hurts like hell and is swelling). We were dismissed early again. I realized that playing DotA is already pointless because I can barely move my left hand and for other stupid reasons.

May 10

Since we have nothing to do, we decided to play "sikyo". After the game, Maam Flerida give us permission to go home for the second time.

May 09

WEDNESDAY... Third to the last day of our SSIP.. We actually did nothing for this day!! The other group got to drive the tractor, because they weren't able to do so before, while we, waited for them to finish. After that, we were dismissed early by Ma'am Flerida.

Wednesday AND Thursday

MAY 9 - Wednesday

We have nothing to do...except watching the other group(Group 2) driving the tractors...then we were dismissed early.

MAY 10 - Thursday

We played "sikyo" while the others are sitting. After that, we were dismissed early(again).

Monday AND Tuesday

MAY 7 - Monday

In this day, we must present an intermission number for the WESVIARC's Anniversary. Our presentation was "YMCA". We were given shirts for the WESVIARC anniversary. In the afternoon, we had lunch and ate our food-to-share.

MAY 8 - Tuesday

In this day we were assigned to the Seed Quality Control together with the other group. We were given a test...without even having a lecture. After that, we were dismissed for the morning. In the afternoon, we were toured by Mr.Nemecio in their lab. We saw pictures of pathogens. After that we were made to put 25 rice seeds in a "circular glass".

Hands down..

Monday, a day of ridiculous surprises..(WESVIARC'S ANNIVERSARY)
When I arrived in WESVIARC, it was full of whimsical merriment. Flamboyant flags, loud music, and hectic people preparing for this that make the scene all too dreamlike. I found the others in the conference hall getting ready for our not so big number.
There was a mass, but my group didn’t bother to attend because we had to finish our bothersome poster (I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the noble and courageous efforts of Kate in brining the hard to bring poster). We spent much of our time figuring out how to assemble our poster without it looking crammed. Finally, we were liberated from the poster when it was finished.
Then, we had our shared lunch. Our lunch was really a memorable moment compared to the other events. After that, we had to prepare for our YMCA dance. When it was finally our turn in the dance floor, we danced like the unprepared scholars that we are.. It wasn’t so pleasant, but the music keeped playing.

Afterwards, we sat back and let time fly by, until the reverie ended..

First week

Nothing much happened in the f 1ST WEEK.We had lecture about germination. It showed how many bananas you can have from one banana shoot. It's just like a step by step process. The 1st week was kinda boring..

Nothing, All Throughout

1 more day to go!!

MAY 08 == TUESDAY

The day after the anniversary, many of us arrived a few minutes late, maybe because we were all so tired from watching the festivities(even though we did so while sitting down..). We waited 'til it was 9 o'clock, or past that, then Ma'am Flerida called us and led us to the seed lab. There, we waited a while for our lecturer, who, by the way was one boring fellow. He arrived a few minutes later, and gave us a pop quiz. About things we don't even know about!! We were pretty bummed about the fact that we were to have low scores because we didn't know anything about what the guy was talking about. After that dreadful quiz, he asked us to introduce ourselves, and he took a particular liking on Mitzi..=) However, when we asked HIM what his name was, he ignored us!! And on he went with his lecture(was that really a lecture?). I think he wasn't really interested in having us learn anything, because he lectured us while sitting down, and wasn't really explaining anything to us, and he seemed pretty bored himself too. Finally, when he noticed that we were quite quiet, he finally decided to dismiss us.. He even commented that it was better if we were hungry all the time because we were so passive. Gosh..
In the afternoon, we were quite reluctant to return to the seed lab because of Sir he-wont-give-his-name. But in the end, we returned after all. But instead of that lecturer, Sir Nemesio took his place!! Sir Nemesio was a funny fellow, and we really enjoyed his lecture. He led us to an airconditioned room, since, he says, it was so hot in the room we were staying. There, he showed to us the different fungi in a seed, some apparatus used there, and the incubation room. After that, he left us under the care of someone else. This someone else made us plant rice seeds on a moist tissue paper(i guess that's what that is), then she told us to place them in the incubation room. And voila!! Our day was over..=)
The seed fungi
Sir Nemesio..=)
Rice seeds planted on moist tissue paper..

MAY 09 == WEDNESDAY

Third to the last day 'til the 20th day of SSIP.. We actually did nothing for this day!! well, our group that is.. The other group got to drive the tractor, because they weren't able to do so before, while we, waited for them to finish. After they finished, Ma'am Flerida sent us to the Nurswery were we did nothing, but sit...and sit...and sit...and more sitting was what we did. Then, after hours of doing nothing, we were dismissed early!! yippee!!

MAY 10 == THURSDAY

Whew!! WE ACTUALLY DID NOTHING FOR TODAY!! as in NOTHING!! we just waited 'til it was 12 and then Ma'am Flerida told us.."Half day for today!!" Woohoo!!=)

no comment!

May 3, Thursday

We again went to the nursery to 'hide'... Later that morning, the other group (carla, audie, tricia, edward, kate, terence, gregory, lurence, kent, ace, laje...) arrived and joined us in our peaceful 'hide-out'... They joined us while we're having a sumptuous snacks, indian mangoes.(hehehe...)

May 4, Friday

Whew! Time really flies very fast! It's Friday again!
but our task to accomplish today is quite tough... We should segregate the expired seeds from the 'newly bought' ones...

Can you imagine that how many sacks we were to segregate??? Well, as a matter of fact! about 4 sacks...

All of us were ready to help so that we can all go home as early as possible...

*we first separated the expired and not expired... ( i was the one who collected the
expired ones and chari gathered the new ones.)
*then we have to group them according to their variety...
'this made us think why the scientists identified so many varieties that slight
distinction can make another variety of seed'
*after grouping them together now we have to pack them by 10's.
(me and aisha halped each other in packing the packets. we took turns in cutting the
scotch tape and taping the packets together...)
*we all put them into the sacks and tied the sacks and labeled the new ones
as 'VIABLE'(this means that these seeds can still be planted...)

After all those things that we should do, we finished it right before lunch time!!! (this
really shows that we can do all things faster and easily when all are working together...)

In the afternoon, while we were cleaning-up... Ma'am Flerida informed us that we are
going to have an intermission number to be presented on Monday during the anniversary of
WESVIARC.

After several suggestions regarding the music, we finally came up with the song YMCA.
This was our basic music taught to us by our PE teacher when we were in 2nd year.

We practiced and decided to have our t-shirt personalized for our internship and also for
our intermission number so that it will be uniformed.

As a whole, this weak was BALANCED two days of NO WORK and TWO DAYS OF HECTIC AND TIRESOME DAYS...( May 1 is exempted because it is considered as a holiday.)

Tractor bump cars 2

We did another episode of the tractor bump cars and we ended up not driving at all!!! The group one drived the bump cars and they got all the fun!!! That's OK we had our time last two weeks. Now we had nothing to do for the rest of the day so we just went to the nursery and spent the rest of the morning there!!

MAy 8

The day was Tuesday when Ma'am Flerida sent us to the seed quality control center to have lecture about seeds. When we arrived they gave us immediately a test and it was very hard to answer because we had no idea with terms asked. After the test, we had a short lecture and we dismissed.

In the afternoon, we went again to seed quality control center. There we have met Sir Nemesio and he taught us how to determine the pathogens inside the seed. We had a practical on it and it was simple but takes a lot of time because we must return to the 8th or 9th day to see the pathogens in the microscope.

Fiesta!!!!

Monday morning, it was fiesta and we ate and party!!!

†YMCA†

May 7:
We arrived at 7:30 so that we could practice for our intermission number for today. Our presentation was a line dance "YMCA". We also have a shirt that was made for WESVIARC's anniversary. I was pissed off because they wouldn't accept my design of having printing "JayC Mongs" in the front of the shirt. Each of us brought food to share during lunch execpt Payba. After our intermission the audience gace a loud applause because the horrible dance dance was over. I think I even saw someone puke.

May8:
We went to the Seed Quality Control. The building was very well built and was the most cool because it was donated by Japan. The two groups were there and we were both given a test even before a lecture. Then we were dismissed for the morning. During the afternoon we saw photograph microscopes and pathogens. hen we were made to put 25 (14outer,10middle,1 in the center) rice seeds in a culturing glass thingy. Then I was angry that we would have to return after nine days to see the fungus.

May9:
Our group learned how to drive a tractor but he wouldn't let us go to a higher gear because he wanted all the fun for himself. Then we were dismissed and need not to come back in the afternoon.

Today:
We played sikyo while Chari(absent),Terence,Carla,Audie and Jonathan were sitting. Then we were dismissed and I went to "The One" to post this darn blog.

The Day After Today
I went to WESVIARC to log in and I left because I had something important to do. I will return after a few hours.

3rd week

April 30:
After the flag ceremony we were briefed on the survey that was delayed because it rained last friday. Jonathan and I were lucky enough to have surveyed Ma'am Flerida. During the afternoon we had a lecture on the Morphology of The Rice Plant. After the lecture we had a short test about rice.

May 2:
We were assigned to the Engineering Department for the week. But when we arrived there the guy who was supposed to teach us how to drive a tractor was absent because he was tired of teaching people how to drive a tractor so that he would have all the fun. Ma'am Flerida told us to go to the nursery and Sir Ike told us the importance of grafting mangoes.

May 4:
We separate expired seeds from the ones that were not. I learned about the different varieties of seeds. After segragating them the boys watched "Kill Bill 2". During the afternoon we practiced for the upcoming anniversary of WESVIARC.
May 7, 2007 Monday

The pugo project is almost done at about 8:15 in the morning. We were to present a dance as an intermission number for today is WESVIARC's anniversary. Our presentation was a line dance-YMCA. Also we have a shirt specially printed for the occasion. The shirt has on it's front a man with a very enormous egg. At noon we ate lunch, big time lunch. Some of us brought food, like Kate ,Audie and Quiogue. Before we went home, we have finished our project and passed it to our "boss"- sir Daniel.

May 8, 2007 Tuesday

We are assigned to the Seed Quality Control. Our two groups was joined, that of Mitzi and our group. Then we wee given a test. A TEST. We weren't even given a lecture before the test. The person who was giving us the test said he would give us the test so he could finish his work. I don't know if he was joking or somthing but he was smiling after seeing our papers. Then we were dismissed for tghe a.m.. In the afternoon we were toured in the lab by Mr. Nemecio. Well we saw photograph microscopes and pathogen pics. Then we were made to put 25 rice seeds in a culturing glass thing. I heard it was to culture fungus and it needs 9 days. Well I don't get it but I think we would be returning to WESVIARC on MAy 16 to have our clearance signed.

May 9, 2007 Wednesday

We observed the other group, that of Mitzi, drive tractors. Then we were dismissed at 11:00 am. We didn't have to return in the afternoon.

May 9, 2007 Thursday

We sat around. Well I mean me, Carla and Audie. The others played sikyo. Then we were dismissed at about 10.

Last report for the SSIP.

Last 3 days of the 2nd week

Wednesday:

All we did was make the stupid poster during the morning and during lunch time I went with Jonathan to his house to copy pictures of cows. We also copied pictures that were funny like

Thursday:

We were still making the damn poster. During lunch me and Alex went to "The One" to print the pictures but the printer ran out of colored ink so we went back to wesviarc with the printed research and blank and white pictures of cows. During the afternoon since the poster wasn't finished yet we asked sir daniel if we can pass it tomorrow. And because he was tired of watching over us he said yes so we would leave and he would have nothing to do.

Friday:

We passed the project and had a lecture about vegetables and since it was the same lecture last week I acted like I was listening but what I really was doing was listening to my mp3 and writing "JayC Mongs" in my notebook.

wednesday 05-09-07

This morning, some of us drove a tractor then we went to the nursery because we have nothing to do. After staying in the nursery for an hour we were told to go home because there was nobody in the seed lab to hold a lecture.

first 2 days of the 2nd week

During the morning we had a flag ceremony and since yesterday was "Earth Day" we offered a short prayer for our Mother Earth. After the flag ceremony, we were divided into two groups and Mrs. Flerida made us go to our respective places. We were assigned to the livestock and poultry division. We were made to research about cattle and to make a poster that informs about it.

The next day during lunch time me, jonathan and alex went out to research about cattle. Jonathan and alex went to their homes and I went to "The One". I played 45 minutes of DotA with the brother of Jonathan and his friends then I research about cattle. I learned that many things that day like:
Raigor is actually based on icefrog's pet cow
Cows in Japan and US make 15 times more milk than cows in the Philippines
Chickens are sorted to their breed
If their is no newspaper on were the baby chickens step on, the chickens may grow up to have abnormal feet.
When I came back to WESVIARC only me and jonathan brought researched on cattle and alex came back empty handed. So as Ma'am Flerida punished him with a one day absent on his DTR.

May 7

It was the foundation day of WESVIARC. We were busy because we were tasked to give a special number in the program. In the program, there held the dance sport competition. In the afternoon, we performed well in that special number.

LAST WEEK

3rd Day:

We went to the engineering section where Group 2 were taught to drive the tractor. It took us a long time because the tractor is so slow. After that, we proceeded to the Nursery section where we ate some santol and waited. After waiting for a long time, we went back. To our surprise, Ma'am Flerida said that we're already dismissed and it's our half day today.

LAST WEEK

2nd Day:

We went inside the seed section and met our lecturer for the day. Before we even had a lecture, Sir i-don't- know-his-name gave us a test about seed certification, seed testing and a lot of stuff that we can't relate to. Well, the topic is mostly about seeds but we weren't able to have any discussion regarding the topic. After that, we had our lunch and came, this time, with a different lecturer. His name is Sir Nemicio (is the spelling correct?) and he's a great and funny guy.

We had a few minutes of chatting and then, we proceeded to an airconditioned room where we saw posters of different fungis growing in the crops. There were equipments and samples on the table and Sir Nemicio showed us some "lumpia" well, its actually a moist "tissue" (it's not actually a tissue but it looks like one) with rice seeds growing inside.

We were also taught how to place rice seeds on a moist "tissue" inside a circular glass piece. One glass piece must have 25 rice seeds. 14 seeds as the outer ring, 10 seeds as the inner ring and 1 seed in the middle.

after that we placed our work on a shelf and proceeded to go outside.

After a few moments of doing nothing, Ma'am Flerida allowed us to go home.

LAST WEEK

1st Day:

We arrived at WESVIARC with so many people preparing for the event. There were a lot of tables, chairs and people who were visting the place. We just stayed inside the conference room and watched through the windows. There's one "boombastic" number from the college students that got lots of heads turning.

We
also spent our time practicing for our intermission number and boy, was it short. Lunch time came and we prepared our food on the 2 tables provided for us. We thought that we're the only people who's going to eat in our place but the college students joined with us. We also gave some of our food to the ice cream and quail eggs vendor.

After lunch, we rested for a while and next thing we know, we're at the center dancing YMCA (boy, was that embarassing or what?). A huge crowd applaused for us ( but i think they did that because our dance is over..8D)

After that, we rested again for a while and went home afterwards.

monday 05-07-07

foundation day in WESVIARC
In the morning, we were practicing for our intermission number while there was an awarding ceremony outside. At lunch, we ate lots of food. In the afternoon, we performed in front of farmers and agriculturists. maybe our dance was enjoyable because the audience was clapped so hard or may they were happy because the horrible dance was over.

3RD WEEK

Last Day:

We segragated another huge pile of seeds (vegetables this time). Again, we separated the expired seeds from the not expired seeds. We then grouped the not expired seeds by 10, taped it together and putted them back in the sack. Later in the afternoon, we spent the remaining time we had by practicing our dance for monday. We then went home after having our practice beacause everybody was eager to go home

3RD WEEK

Day 4:

Thursday wasn't so different from the previous days we spent here in WESVIARC. Early in the morning, we went to the Livestock Department and as usual, we talked about our poster about quails. We spent almost 2 hours hours talking at the same time resting inside the office. Moments later, We were called to join the other group in the NURSERY and spent a long time watching them do some stuff. later in the afternoon, Ma'am Demamay held a meeting with us to talk about WESVIARC'S birthday and went home after that.

Monday May 5,2007, foundation day of WESVIARC

Monday,
The day was special for the research center ,for it is the founding of WESVIARC. It was a special day so many farmers and agriculturists visited the center. There were contests held and many participants joined. There was also an awarding for the people who suceed in this course of study.
We were part of the special occasion so they told us to show an intermission number for the people to enjoy. It went fine and many people clapped and enjoyed the performance.

Wait a Minute

May 7 == Monday

ANNIVERSARY DAY!! weeee!!
Unlike any other day, we started before 8 am.. This was because we had to practice for that intermission number which was only given to us last friday. We didn't have a flag ceremony(whew!), but we did have a mass to start the WESVIARC anniversary.. As the morning progressed, we stayed in the Conference Hall to finish our poster(IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FINISHED YESTERDAY, SADLY, IT GOT RUINED..UGH!!) Well, WE refers to Audie, Terence, and me.. The others went outside to witness the ongoing festivities.. After 'finishing' the poster, we finally went out to 'enjoy'. There were a lot of things going on outside, a dance sports competition, a sizzling number from the OJT students, and a lot others. Since it was really hot, we decided to go back inside and talk instead. Then, after a long while, we were called because it was time for our lunch-sharing.. It wasn't exactly what I pictured it out to be.. I thought it was going to be US, Pisaynons, only.. Turned out, there were the OJTers as well.. But still, we managed to enjoy the food(especially Terence). Kate's cake was scrumptiously scrumptious.=) We had fun playing with the icing..hehe..
While eating the cake though, the ice cream vendor who was always in WESVIARC approached us and said "That cake looks delicious.."(in hiligaynon mixed with tagalog..). Tricia then had the first instinct of giving some to him..0=)Yum!!
In the afternoon, we practiced for our number. We thought we were going to perform at 1:30, turned out it was past two..ah, Filipino time..=)
well, that was it..
Happy Anniversary WESVIARC!!=)

Chickens!!!

We went to WESVIARC for another day. We were assigned at the livestock!!! At last!!! But Alas!!! We have to pick some chicken poo!!! Do we have to? But it was fun until that lecture!!!

Kate

Hail Kate!!!

FRIDAY

MAY 4 - Friday
We segregated the expired and the un-expired seeds and put them in the sacks. In the afternoon,we had a meeting about the monday's event. We practiced for our number to be performed on monday.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY

MAY 2 - Wednesday
We are moved to the livestock department. We were told about our project, a poster about quails. In the afternoon, we were tasked to observe Sir Gino and Sir Jabiz in obtaining fecal samples from the labeled chickens. Some did the job to catch the chickens while the others were tasked to get fecal samples.

MAY 3 - Thursday
In the morning, we stayed in the Livestock department. After that, we were told to go to the Nursery, where the other group(crops) was. In the afternoon, we were gathered by Ma'am Flerida and had a meeting about the event on monday.

MONDAY and TUESDAY

APRIL 30 - Monday
In the morning, We were tasked to do a survey about the population of the people living in WESVIARC. We visited one house and did our survey there. In the afternoon, we had a lecture about the rice plant.

MAY 1 - Tuesday
LABOR DAY

our 3rd week..

April 30

In the morning,we conducted a survey on the residents of WESVIARC. We enjoyed interacting with other people.

In the afternoon, we had a lecture about the rice plant. We learned that the rice have four main parts: panicle, leaf, stem, and the roots. We also learned the 3 growth phases of rice:
~vegetative phase (from germination- panicle initiation)
~ reproductive phase (from panicle initiation- flowering)
~ ripening phase (from flowering- harvesting)

I thought working in WESVIARC will free me from math equations. But I was wrong. In order to know how many days is the vegatative phase,we must subtract 65 from the number of the days of maturity.

May 2

We thought our group will be already taught on how to drive a tractor. But because almost all employees were busy for the anniversary (which will be next week), we did nothing.

May 3

Time is indeed fast. We are already on our 15th day of apprenticeship in WESVIARC.

In the morning, we segregated packets of viable plant and herbs from the expired ones.
We also classified them into species and varieties in where they belong. I realized that there are many varieties of cucumber, pumpkins, lettuce and other vegetables and herbs.
In the afternoon we practised our intermission number for the anniversary celebration of wesviarc which will be on Monday, May 7.

our 2nd week..

April 23

Today is Monday so we attended the flag ceremony. Sir Daniel gave another speech regarding the Earth Day celebration yesterday, April 22.
Ma'am Flerida divided us into two groups. Our group (Aisha, Chari, Gelli, Mitzi, Alex, Jonathan, Ramon and I) were assigned to the livestock department whilr the others were at the crops section.
We were introduced to Sir Daniel, the senior agriculturist. He gave us an assignment which was to make a poster about cattles.

April 24

We were toured and at the same time lectured on the livestock and poultry sections in the campus by Sir Javis.
He presented to us the incubator they're using to hatch the eggs. The incubator heats the eggs and after the thermostat reaches the maximum temperature the bulb automatically turns off to cool down. Then, after reaching the minimum temperature, the bulb automatically turns on again. Sir Javis told us that the eggs should also be rolled from time to time so that each area of the egg receives equal amount of heat.
We learned that there are two types of incubation: artificial and natural. Natural incubation is done by the hen through laying while artificial uses electricity with human intervention.
Sir Javis showed us the Brooding cage where newly hatched chicks are raised. It has a bulb to maintain heat and the base is covered with a sheet of newspaper where the feeds are spread.
We also watched Sir Javis feed the chickens.
The rest of the day was spent for making our poster. Making the poster was fun because we had become more acquainted with our groupmates and some of the agriculturists in the office like Sir Ginno and Ma'am Anelyn.

April 27

This is the last day in the Livestock section.

We already finished our poster and we're ready to pass it. Since Sir Daniel wasn't in office today, we passed it to Sir Ginno.

We were dismissed early because of the rain.

May 4-Friday

Another day already passed us by, and we are now in the last day of our 3rd week here in WESVIARC. This morning was very unusual, we were asked to separate at least 3 sacks of expired and unexpired seeds of plants. And that doesn't stop there, after separating the unexpired seeds, we also have to segregate them by kind and by varieties. It took us quite awhile. But, I'm proud to say that after all the work, I learned more about the varieties and the kind of vegetables present in this world. And when the afternoon came, we practiced for the upcoming anniversary of the station. Why? Because, earlier today, Ma'am Flerida asked us to prepare an intermission number for Monday. Talk about cramming!

May 2-Wednesday

The day started with the usual "gathering in the guard house, waiting for others". It was an exciting day for us(Group 2) because we were assigned in the Engineering Department for the week. But, unfortunately, when we arrived to the department, there was nobody to teach us how to drive the tractor or just even how to sit properly while driving. So, Ma'am Flerida told us to go to the nursery to "HIDE". While in the nursery, we met Sir Ike. He told us the importance of grafting mangoes. We also learned different kinds of mangoes and how to harvest them. We learned to differentiate the usual mango form the indian mango and the apple mango.

April 30-Monday

A lot has happened last week, and we expect another tiring week ahead. The Monday morning started with the usual flag ceremony, but it ended differently. There was a discussion of the things to do for the upcoming anniversary of the institution and it was ended with Sir Javis reading a verse from the bible. Not the usual, right? After the flag ceremony, we were gathered by Ma'am Flerida in the conference hall. It's time to conduct the survey which was delayed last week because of the bad weather. In the afternoon, we attended a lecture regarding the Morphology of The Rice Plant. I learned a lot of things during the lecture and believe it or not, everybody was paying attention to the lecture. Why? Because, during the discussion, there were several questions which we have to answer on our own. After the discussion we were also given a quick review of what we've learned through a series of questions.(just like in pisay...)

May 03

MAY 3 In the morning, we stayed in the Livesock department we just doing nothing because our materials for the poster was not yet there. After sometime, we were told to go to the Nursery and join the other group eating mangoes. In the afternoon, we had a short meeting with Ma'am Flerida about the celebration of the foundation day of WESVIARC. After the meeting we were dismissed early.
MAY 2 We were assigned to the livestock department. We were told about our assignment for the week, a poster about quails. In the afternoon, we were tasked to observe Sir Gino and Sir Jabiz in obtaining fecal samples from the labeled chickens. The boys did a great job in catching the chickens while the others were tasked to get fecal samples. After that we were lectured about the different hatching days of the different fowls by Sir Jabiz.
We segregated seeds into expired to expired. After we finished in the task, we were dismissed early. In the afternoon, Maam Flerida told us we must practice for an intermission number because there will be celebration on monday.

N****ing! Sit back and sit tight I'm gonna need you to keep time.. (May 3)

First thing in the morning, we went to the livestock department. The idea of making the poster seemed to be far off. We had practically nothing to there due to numerous reasons. And because of this “we had nothing to do” and for the fact that no one was going to “baby sit” us; we were transferred to the crop department at the nursery. There, we learned what we’ve already learned. That was some boring day… Our only lifelines were cellphones, gameboys, and a couple of girly magazines (magazines that I’ve read! Was I desperate!)… We were so sore from doing nothing. The day ended with much relief. We were still young and desperate for attention...

The blood that I still owe.. (May 2)

Wednesday was our turn in the livestock department. Our first assignment was to make a poster just like what the pisay interns of yesterdays had done. Our topic was about quails. We were short of materials, so some of us went out to research while others plan out the appearance of the poster. There were several suggestions like “it should be like a sliding window”, or “it should be like a book”, or “it should have a live quail in it!” Due to the lack of materials, we had nothing to do.. Until, we were assigned to get fecal samples from chickens. It was the last task of the day. Others went down to the business of catching the chickens while others went out to do the dirty job of getting the crap straight out from the chicken’s butt. Obviously, some were revolted. My turn was all too much peculiar. Instead of pooo, I’ve got blood coming out of my chicken. And it didn’t happen once. It happened twice. As if it was some kind of strange omen..?

You wear me out.. (May 4)

The last Fridays had been notorious for ending up boring. And this third week’s Friday ended up pretty much the same as the last ones. But don’t get me wrong, the whole day wasn’t that dull. This Friday had a little edge to it. We were told to segregate seeds. And segregate seeds we did. The faster we sort them out the better, for it was getting tiresome.
In the afternoon, we planned about the big day on Monday, WESVIARCS b-day. After that , we practiced on our dance for monday. We didn't got far with the practice because everybody was eager to go home. Although we had something to do, the day ended up boring…
It was as if Friday had a shotgun wedding with boredom.

Wednesday 3rd week

In this day, our group was sent to the livestock unit of the research center. We were intoruced Sir Daniel , who is the head of this unit. We were tasked by sir Daniel to do a poster that will show different kinds of information about Quails so we planned for the whole morning. In the afternoon, We had met Sir Gino and sir Jabez. They told us to observe on how to get fecal samples to labeled chickens. Some of us were assigned to catch the labeled chickens ,and some were assigned to get the fecal samples. The purpose of the fecal is to determine the sickness of the chicken.

The day went fine and all is great.

The 3rd week

Monday
We learned a lot of things on the second week which includes a lot about cattle, chicken, and goats. These can also be classified into livestock(cattle and goats) or poultry(chicken). We spent most of the week in the livestock department and working on our poster. We also learned a lot by observing how people in the agriculture business work. We followed sir jabez one day on his daily routine of taking care of the goats and chickens in westviarc.
Wednesday
We were assigned on the crops and engineering department this week of westviarc. On monday we conducted a survey of the people who are currently living on westviarc. On tuesday we had no work because it was labor day. But on wednesday we harvested mangoes and ate it afterwards where we learned the diffrent varieties and the importance of grafting mango trees. The importance for grafting is to make flowering and fruit bearing of the tree faster and more productive
Friday
Well it is the end of the week and we still didn't have the privilege to drive anything in the engineering department. We just segregated and classified expired and unexpired seeds the whole morning and classified them into groups according to the diffrent varieties. We learned that there are a lot of diffrent kinds of varieties of vegetables and that most of them are hybrids depending on public demand. And we are now practicing for our intermission number for the westviarc foundation day. Well, till next time.. Ciao!!

friday of the second week

The 3rd day of the second week was when we were supposed to help in a survey on the number of residents in wesviarc but it seems that it was cancelled because of the rain. The significant thing that happened in our 2nd week was the poster we made which we submitted to the livestock department for their use. It was a learning experience to us because we learned a lot of different things about cattle that we didn't even know before.

3rd week

April 30
The day started with a flag ceremony followed by several announcements for the preparation of the celebration of a feast day on May 7. We conducted a survey of the different residents of Hamungaya. We were divided into eight groups so that it would be easier for the interviewee to accommodate us in their house. We also had a lecture regarding the Morphology of a Rice Plant. I’ve learned the different parts of a rice plant as well as their growth phases.

May 2
For this week, we were assigned at the engineering station. Unfortunately, the person who is supposed to teach us was absent so we were transferred to the nursery. We learned how to harvest mango and we became familiar with different varieties like Indian mango, Carabao mango, and Apple mango. After harvesting, we started to eat the mangoes then Sir Ike informed us about the importance of grafting mango trees.

May 4
When we were all in, Ma’am Flerida told us to go to the conference hall. We separated about three sacks of seed into expired or not expired. After separating them, we segregated the non-expired seeds according to the type of vegetable. It took us long because for every kind of vegetable there were many varieties. Ma’am Flerida told us that we were going to perform an intermission number on May 7, so we spent the whole afternoon for planning and practicing.

2nd week

On our second week, we were divided into two groups. Our group was assigned in the livestock division while the other was assigned in the crops division. This was done so that it would be easier for the employees to manage us.

April 23
In the morning, we went to our respective sections wherein we introduced ourselves to Sir Daniel, head of the livestock section. He gave us an assignment, making a poster about cattle, which is due for submission on April 26. We were dismissed early so the boys went out to start researching while the girls stayed behind. Instead of doing nothing, we asked Ma’am Flerida to give us something to do. She asked us to type the attendance sheet of the OJT students. In the afternoon we bought materials for our poster.

April24
Sir Javis toured us to the different livestock present at WESVIARC. First, we went to the field where the goats are, then we proceeded to where the chickens are and there we watched them being fed. I’ve learned that the chickens were sorted according to their breed. After that, we started to make our poster. The boys went out to research more information about cattle.

April25
We worked on our poster again. We spent half-day working on the background of the poster. Some of our group mates continued their research outside WESVIARC. Before we were dismissed, we’re almost done but it still needs final touches.

Friday

We were asked to segregate what felt like 4 sacks of seeds. Believe me, it was a lot of work. We separated the expired ones from the good ones. The good ones were then further classified and grouped by their kinds.
In the afternoon, we practiced for our intermission number to be presented on Monday. We started practicing at two, and after an hour, we still had nothing. When 3:30 came, we settled with a dance that we all knew and even you, the reader might know.
Young men nananananana… It’s fun to stay at the YMCA!
Wish us luck! We need it!

Wednesday and Thursday

Wednesday. Ma’am Flerida said that we were to be assigned in engineering. That means that we would drive the “traktora”! Wrong. We were seen by the head of WESVIARC waiting outside a “building”, so to speak. He then confronted Ma’am Flerida not to leave us outside places scattered in different bunches. So, we were sent to the nursery to “hide”. Our hiding place became a paradise for Chari and the others because we were given mangos – a lot of mangoes. In the afternoon, we didn’t do anything.
Thursday. We again were made to hide in the nursery and ate mangoes the whole morning and we were joined by the other group. In the afternoon, we again did nothing.

Monday and Tuesday

Monday. The usual thing happened this Monday morning. We attended a flag ceremony at 8:00. Then, we had conducted a survey around the WESVIARC property. We got information about the people living there. In the afternoon, we had a lecture about the rice plant. We were taught about its parts, the parts of its parts, and the different stages and their durations.
Tuesday. Labor day. No work.

3rd week monday

Every Monday, we always start with the flag ceremony. Then we continued our survey that was cancelled last week. The survey was done by pairs. That was the first time I had a survey. Thanks to my partner.

First week of May

but our third week at WESVIARC (huhuhu)

Tuesday, May 1

Today is LABOR DAY!!!! (we have no work to do...)

Wednesday, May 2

We should be working at the Engineering Department but nobody was there to tend to us. Ma'am Flerida decided to just assign us to go to the Nursery. While we were waiting for Ma'am Flerida's further instructions, Sir Iking gave us several bunches of 'indian mango'... he then gave us a knife to peel the mangoes... We were very excited to eat some... After a few minutes, we consumed all the mangoes he brought us.

Correction! today is the last day of April....

April 30

As usual, we had a flag ceremony...
We then proceeded under the mango trees because we are going to have a survey...(the survey must have been done last friday but unfortunately, it rained...)
Ma'am Flerida briefed us on what to do and where to go... As expected, the three of us again were in the same group: me, Chari and Gelli... We were assigned at Ma'am Mugar's residence. She is one of the employees of WESVIARC... We were the only triad and the rest are pairs because there are nineteen of us... We were put there because Ma'am Flerida said that she has an extended family living in their house. Her brother and his family lives with them. As we read what she has written on our survey sheet, they are living there for almost 11 years.(Imagine?)

In the afternoon, we had an interesting discussion all about rice: its reproductive cycle and period, how to calculate the whole duration of its growth and many more about rice.

While having the discussion, she inserted some questions to know whether we were paying attention or not.(that was wise, wasn't it?)... It ended around five in the afternoon. So we all decided to go straight home.

first day

Our first day in WESVIARC, was not enjoyable because there was nothing to do. We had a flag ceremony then orientation, a lecture in tissue culture and then went home.

YMCA

Third week has come and gone, and it seems pretty fast that in one week's time, SSIP would come to an end.

MAY 3 == Thursday

Second day in the livestock department, and it seemed we weren't actually there. Sir Daniel wasn't around, so we were left under Ma'am Anelyn's care. She hardly took notice of us, and when she finally did, it was only to tell us that Ma'am Flerida needs to talk to Lurence. That 'talk' turned out to be an order for us to vacate the Livestock office because Ma'am Anelyn would be leaving and no one would be left to watch over us.. So off we went and we were transferred to the Nursery together with the 'crops' group. We didn't do anything there except watch them peel mangoes and talk (well, Audie and I did this crossword puzzle). After more than an hour of doing nothing, we decided to go and have lunch..
But still, in the afternoon, we had nothing to do.. At two o'clock, Ma'am Flerida gathered us for a meeting regarding Monday's festivities.. This went on for an hour or less, and we were dismissed!!=)

May 4 == Friday

A day filled with sorting out seeds. We had to separate(again) expired and not-expired seeds. It was tiresome, and messy and dirty.. After sorting out so many seed packets, our hands were so dirty!! It was black(grayish, whatever..) from all the dust that was gathered from those packets. More, and more sacks of seed packets arrived(carried by Nong Geron..), and we had to sort them still.. After more than an hour of segregating those seed packets, we decided to refresh ourselves at the canteen. We stayed there longer than we planned, but yet, we managed to return and find them still working on the seeds, so we helped(again). This was our activity for the WHOLE morning, and we felt pretty bummed out that at noon, our fingers were caked with dust.
In the afternoon, we had nothing to do(yet again), and so Chari gathered us to have a meeting about the upcoming festivities(then again). Then, to finish the day, we practiced our number for Monday's event(we shall dance YMCA....=)). And off we went!!=)

April 30,2007 Monday

We were given papers that are to be used for surveying the population of wesviarc residents. One was given for every pair. My pair was Greg. Before we commenced on the survey, mam Flerida first briefed us with the college interns. Then she led us across the houses of the residents of wesviarc. The survey aimed to know the number of squatting residents in Wesviarc. Our intervewee was a Mr. Carmelo. It appears that squatters are even employees of wesviarc itself. It also appears that they have been here for a long time now for their houses are concrete. In the afternoon, we,together with the college interns, were given a lecture on rice plants- their main parts and their life cycle. a researcher from the regional office gave the lecture.

May 1, 2007 Tuesday

It is Labor Day. Which means......... no work!!

May 2,2007 Wednesday

We are moved from the crops department to the livestock department. We were briefed for our project for the department- PUGO POSTER. Later, we were led to the poultry area for our reconnaisance mission- fecal retrieval. Our lecturer was a Mr Jaybiz. We were to insert our fecal collection device,a stick with cotton on the tip, the rear of our subject-live chicken. I was one of the entrapment people, catching the "ferocious" chickens. Then Audie, Greg and Carla began the insertion process. Carla failed with the first attempt but eventually walked away with the prize-chicken poop. Greg easily made it, while Audie's mission was a disaster. Audie's chicken was like the rest but when he retrieved his device and examined its contents, we saw blood. Audie must have ripped apart the insides of the chicken. However, there was another operation to be conducted-more chickens to test. Again we caught chicken and we tested them. Greg's chicken didn't have what we need(poop), so it was released. Kate's chicken had poop, but Carla had to retrieve it for Kate. Audie in the other hand was uh. .ripping apart chicken insides. Well Audie's chickens seem to have diseases, seems to be a coincidence.

We did not do anything spectacular for the morning. Well, I ate ice candy. In the afternoon, Carla, Greg, Audie and me bought construction materials for our project. Besides these events, nothing really spectacular took place in WESVIARC. Well, the afternoon, I ate another Ice candy.

monday 3rd week

On this day, we were tasked to do a survey at the whole community in the research center. The purpose of the survey is to know the people who live around the research center. This survey was done by pairs. We visit houses and asked them questions, like how many years they stayed near the center and who permitted them to stay.
As for me , I was a little bit nervous because it was my first time to do a survey. Good thing it went well.

last two 'working' days for April

THURSDAY, APRIL 26

Today is the deadline of our project about 'CATTLE'...
We were all in great commotion...
Each one was busy doing something to duly accomplish our project...
We made miniature cattles of different colors... We then pasted them on the vacant spaces... our researched materials were cut into smaller pieces and were pasted on a colored paper which served as its background... We really enjoyed doing those things the whole day... we were almost through when we noticed that the plastic cover that me and gelli brought was not enough to cover the whole project... So Chari volunteered to wrap it tonight...
We asked sir daniel if we can pass it tomorrow... He immediately said YES! because he saw all our efforts just to beat the deadline...
We were all very happy to hear it from him...
So we bade goodbye and thank him for extending the deadline...

FRIDAY, APRIL 27

I went to WESVIARC early to know if the 'BEARER OF OUR CATTLE' project has arrived. Upon entering the gates of WESVIARC... I saw Chari waving our project... YES!!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!
We had a short lecture about vegetables...
They said that the lecture was the same with the one discussed last week when I was absent...
After that lengthy 'short' lecture, ma'am flerida dismissed us because the college students will be having a clean-up at the dormitory...
We all went to the guardhouse and logged out...

3RD WEEK

Day 3:

After having so much fun in the crops section last week, we exchanged sections with group 2. The livestock wasn't so bad after all because we were staying in an aircondi
tioned room and we spent a lot of time inside the office getting lectures from Sir Daniel.

He assigned us to make a poster about quails. Group 2 last week was assigned about cattles and they actually did a pretty good job. After so much of Sir Daniel's instructions and
lecture, he dismissed us to talk about our poster and boy, it's not really easy.

After spending so much time inside the office, we decided to eat lunch and spend the remaining time playing volleyball.

We came back later in the afternoon with surprising events in
stored for us. We met two guys, Sir Jabiz and Sir i-forgot-his-name.

They were great and they taught us interesting facts about chickens.

(note: l-r, Sir Jabiz and Mr. Mysterious =p)

I thought we're just going to look at chickens and have a "long" lecture about them but i guess i was wrong...actually half-wrong.

(terence is the brave soul who is outnumbered by "feathered warriors" but still manage to catch some of them)

I guess part of the lecture is catching some chickens and using long cotton buds (at least that's what we call them) to insert at the anus of the chicken to get "poo" samples. Sir i-forgot-his-name told us that they need these samples to know if the chickens have some internal disorders or diseases.

(here's a pic of carla taking some chicken "poo" out of its anus)

(and here is audie trying it out too)

(infamous pic of a chicken's anus)

After that unexpecting (can i say disgusting?) experience. We moved back to the office and we went inside a "secret" (nah...just joking) door that opens to a room with incubators. Sir Jabiz explained to us how to raise the chicken's eggs and he asked us a question (or should i say trick question...=p) "who came first? the chicken or the egg?". Most of us didn't answer that question but still Sir Jabiz explained it to us.

He then showed us lots of eggs inside an incubator (note: cover your nose because the smell isn't good).

We even saw one that is hatching!

Well, after all these activities, we retreated to the office again and did nothing for more than an hour. After that, Sir Daniel dismissed us and off we went home...hooorah!

Be A Man =)

MAY 2 [Wednesday]

First session for May..=)

To start with, since we were in the crops section last week, it was now our turn at the Livestock session.. It was fun, for our first day there..
In the morning, we met with Sir Daniel, the head in the Livestock department. He then gave us our assignment for the entire duration of our stay there in the Livestock department, which is to make a poster about QUAILS. Then, he dismissed us.. Yippee!
The interesting part came in the afternoon..
After waiting for an hour, we were finally called back to the Livestock department. There we met Sir Jabiz(I prefer to pronounce it, Jay-Biz..), and Sir i-forgot-what-his-name-was. We introduced ourselves first, and then Sir i-forgot-what-his-name-was asked us if we'd care to observe and take place in their fecalysis on the chickens. We were intrigued upon hearing the word 'fecalysis', so we eagerly obliged! Sir Jabiz led us to the poultry farm(i guess that's what it is..) and Sir i-forgot-what-his-name-was explained to us how to do it. He didn't show us how, so we have to figure it out ourselves. I volunteered to go first(strong!!), and i was totally freaked out! In the end, only Greg, Audie and I managed to do it succesfully(we were the only ones who tried..) and thatwas it!!

Sir Jabiz then led us to the incubator, and he asked us the trivia question, "which came first, the chicken or the egg?"..Then, we witnessed a chick hatching from its egg!! Whoa..=)

After that, we were dismissed by Sir Jabiz, but we decided to hang out for a while in Sir Daniel's office..=) There, Sir i-forgot-what-his-name-was gave Gregory words of wisdom, and then Sir Daniel dismissed us for good..
"No, it's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality. "
